About the project
The Cancer Waiting List Project at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) addresses the urgent need to reduce the long delays faced by cancer patients awaiting life-saving surgeries. Cancer is the second leading cause of premature death globally and is increasingly becoming a critical health concern in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). In South Africa, cancer incidence is expected to double by 2030, affecting 1 in 9 people. Surgery plays a vital role in cancer treatment, often being the first step in a multidisciplinary care pathway that includes chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However, unmet surgical needs lead to delayed treatment, late-stage diagnoses, and diminished chances of long-term survival.
At GSH, over 500 patients are currently waiting for cancer surgeries, with average waiting times exceeding 10 weeks—double the recommended guidelines. These delays can jeopardize the chances of cure, as timely surgical intervention is essential for diagnosis, treatment, and often palliation. The Cancer Waiting List Project aims to perform an additional 500 cancer surgeries annually by utilizing a newly equipped theatre. This initiative will reduce waiting times by 50%, offering hope to those facing life-threatening cancers.
To operationalize this project, an annual cost of R7 million is required. Your support is crucial in enabling these life-saving surgeries, improving survival rates, and providing timely care to patients in need. Donate today to help us extend hope to patients and families facing the devastating impact of cancer. Together, we can make a life-changing difference.
