About the project
The Western Cape's trauma burden, particularly from assault and violence, places immense pressure on Groote Schuur Hospital, leading to delayed life-saving surgeries. To combat this, the Emergency Fund for Emergency Surgery (EFES) project was launched by the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust. This initiative aims to increase surgical capacity during peak trauma periods, ensuring timely care and reducing waiting times that could otherwise result in preventable deaths or lifelong disabilities.
The EFES project plans to add 70 emergency theatre lists over the course of one year, strategically scheduled before each weekend and further bolstered during long weekends and public holidays. By 2024, this effort aims to facilitate over 200 additional emergency surgeries annually. This project not only saves lives but also protects scheduled elective surgeries from being postponed due to emergency cases.
To make this a reality, we need to raise R2.1 million for the project to cover the costs for one year. Your donation will help restore hope to countless families by preventing unnecessary suffering and enabling patients to return to their lives and loved ones. Join us in this urgent mission to ensure equitable, timely surgical care for all.
