About the project
GSHT is seeking funding to install a Wi-Fi network in the isolation rooms for patients in the Stem Cell Transplant Ward at Groote Schuur Hospital. Stem cell transplant patients endure long periods of isolation during their treatment, often without access to communication, entertainment, or educational resources due to a lack of internet access. This project aims to provide reliable Wi-Fi to enhance their well-being, mental health, and overall treatment experience.
Patients undergoing stem cell transplants spend weeks to months in complete isolation, with minimal visitation allowed due to infection risks. Currently, these patients have no access to internet services, leaving them cut off from loved ones, entertainment, and educational resources. Many come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and cannot afford mobile data for long periods. The lack of connectivity leads to loneliness, depression, and anxiety, even requiring suicide watch in some cases. A reliable Wi-Fi network would be a crucial lifeline, improving mental well-being, reducing isolation, and fostering positive treatment outcomes.
To make this a reality, we need to raise R250 000 for the project to cover the costs for three years. Your donation will help reduce patient isolation by allowing them to stay connected with family and friends, improving their emotional resilience during treatment. Access to entertainment and educational content will ease anxiety and depression, creating a more positive recovery environment.
